Learning to Cope with Stress

We all know about the effects of stress. It damages relationships, it clogs up your mind, it destroys your health. It is important to learn how to minimize or if you can illuminate as much stress as you can. This can be challenging because new stress is always a rising and even more the old stress keeps a good foothold into our mind.

Every animal has stress response, It is usually called the fight or flight reflex. When a deer and antelope or gazelle all the sudden find that they are being chased by a large cat this triggers the fight or flight reflex. For the animal this may last about 15 minutes until they realize that the threat is no longer there they go back to grazing.

Unlike the deer, people can live in stress state for hours, days, months, even years over one event that can keep coming back and every time we think on it our stressors create the adrenaline that floods body. The emotions rage and it takes over our mind, our bodies, and our whole day constantly repeating itself as often as we would choose to think about it

So, how do we let go of something that is really bothering us? If we let a stressful situation be a major part of our thoughts long enough it will start to turn itself into part of our personality. It molds how we react to situations and people when similar situations or words come up again.

I know previously in my life all someone had to do was mention my ex-husband or his name, which was Jim, they could be talking about somebody else but the old feelings to fear, the hatred, anger and negative self-talk would just start rising up again. The adrenaline would pump into my system and that would be the only thing I could think about over the next few hours or more.

In this mini-series we are going to talk about some ways to move past the stress. I am not going to tell you to forget it because our memories are always with us. but we are going to look at ways to react differently to think about life differently and to move towards our future instead of living in our past.
